Can you tell us a little about your average writing day? I use to write in the afternoon…
Tell us about The Code – what’s it about? It’s a crime thriller set in the seedy and little known world of the Deep Web…
Tell us a bit about yourselves. Matt: I’ve been a writer of novels, games, and scripts since 1987…
What do we stand for?
»be« by Bastei Entertainment is an imprint of Bastei Lübbe AG, one of Germany’s largest publishing houses. With 413 employees and an annual turnover of €104.9 million, Bastei Lübbe AG, is based in Cologne on the Rhine. The media group is comprised of 12 publishers and currently offers around 3,600 titles in fiction, non-fiction, and children’s and young adult books. Top authors such as Ken Follett, Dan Brown, Jeff Kinney, and Rebecca Gablé have helped make Bastei Lübbe a market leader in the German-speaking publishing industry.
The imprint »be« originated as Bastei Entertainment, which began publishing German and English ebooks and apps as early as 2011. In autumn of 2016, »be« branched from Bastei Entertainment as an independent imprint, focusing solely on original, debut ebooks.
What we focus on
The »be« English program features ebooks with a focus on crime and suspense, as well as love and romance. In German, the imprint is divided into genres beHeartbeat (romance), beThrilled (crime) and beBeyond (fantasy).
Our editorial interest lies especially in novel-length trilogies and book series.
As for the »be« English program, we’re happy to give our English-speaking authors the chance to publish in English and in German. This allows our authors to share their work with a whole new audience. Combining both the English and German editorial, marketing, and sales teams, the entire »be« family consists of 42 employees, more than 200 books, and 68 authors. One of the central goals of the English branch is to further engage the US and UK book market by working directly with native English-speaking authors.
